The idsea of starting a school for police officers’ children was conceived in the early 1960s. However, it was not until 1991 when the then Commissioner of police, the late Mr. Philip Kilonzo began implementing the idea. On 30th May 1991, the first steering committee was formed. Its first Chairman was a former Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hon. Elijah Sumbeiywo. On December 30th, 1992, the first Principal Mr. Willie M. Mugoh was posted to the school. Our Curriculum Pathways
Utumishi Boys Academy supports both the 8-4-4 and CBC systems, offering different learning experiences tailored to each programme.
Why both? As Kenya transitions to Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), our school continues to serve learners on the 8-4-4 track while also providing CBC pathways. Each system has its own structure, assessment approach, and outcomes — helping families understand what is offered at each level.
8-4-4 System
Traditional secondary pathway through Forms 1–4, culminating in the KCSE national examination.
- Levels offered: Form 1, Form 2, Form 3, and Form 4.
- Structure: 8 years primary, 4 years secondary, and 4 years university progression model.
- Core subjects: Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Sciences, Humanities, and optional examinable subjects.
- Assessment: Continuous tests, mocks, and final KCSE grading (A to E).
- Focus: Subject mastery, exam readiness, discipline, and strong KCSE performance.
- Best suited for: Learners already in the 8-4-4 secondary cycle preparing for national certification.
CBC System
Competency-Based Curriculum emphasizing skills, values, and practical learning under the 2-6-3-3-3 model.
- Levels offered: Junior School (Grade 7, 8, and 9) with CBC-aligned progression.
- Structure: 2 years pre-primary, 6 primary, 3 junior secondary, 3 senior secondary, and 3 tertiary.
- Learning areas: Integrated science, social studies, STEM, languages, arts, and sports pathways.
- Assessment: School-Based Assessments (SBAs), competency tasks, and national summative checkpoints.
- Focus: Competencies, creativity, collaboration, digital literacy, and career pathways.
- Best suited for: Learners in the CBC junior secondary phase building skills for senior school and future careers.
